Evaluating the progression of artificial intelligence and large language models in medicine through comparative analysis of ChatGPT-3.5 and ChatGPT-4 in generating vascular surgery recommendations

In the ever-evolving world of medicine, artificial intelligence (AI) continues to push boundaries. A recent study comparing ChatGPT-3.5 and ChatGPT-4 showcases the transformative potential of large language models (LLMs) in vascular surgery. But what does this mean for the future of clinical care?

AI is already making waves in healthcare, and ChatGPT-3.5 grabbed headlines with its ability to pass the US Medical Licensing Exam. However, the study, led by Dr. Arshia Javidan and colleagues, reveals that ChatGPT-4 is not just an incremental improvement—it’s a leap forward. When tasked with answering 40 clinician-level questions on complex vascular surgery cases, ChatGPT-4 delivered accurate, comprehensive answers 95% of the time, far surpassing the 32.5% accuracy of its predecessor, ChatGPT-3.5.

This research delved into key areas of vascular surgery, including carotid artery disease, abdominal aortic aneurysms, and chronic limb-threatening ischemia. While ChatGPT-4 provided longer, more in-depth responses, it maintained readability, making it a practical tool for clinicians. It signals a future where AI tools could assist in clinical decision-making, offering insights that help surgeons make better, faster decisions.

Despite the impressive strides, the study also highlighted the challenges AI still faces—hallucinations, or factually incorrect information, remain an issue. However, as these models continue to refine, AI is on track to become an invaluable assistant in the operating room and beyond.
